Below is the beginning of the story “Hunting and Fishing with Grandfather” (Seymour Petel), which can be found in Kuipers’ The Shuswap Language. He transcribed the language in an orthography (shown at right) which differs significantly from the modern practical. I have attempted to rewrite the story in the practical orthography at left. It appears that the text is in the eastern dialect, as it contains the phoneme /t’/ and a difference between unstressed /e/ and /ǝ/– written ‹a› and ‹e› respectively. As some of the accented letters are not independently encoded by Unicode, the accents may not appear in the positions they should. |
